CHG Director's Statement: Michael Kmit is widely regarded as the most successful of all Australian-Ukrainian artists. He spent twenty-five years in Australia and is known for introducing a neo-Byzantine style of painting to Australia. His paintings integrated stylised portraiture with geometric forms, patterns and vivid colour.

Kmit consistently impressed the art world with his original approach taking out the Perth Prize in 1954, the Critics' Prize for Contemporary Art in 1955, the Darcy Morris Memorial Prize in 1956 and the Art Gallery of NSW Sulman Prize in 1957.

Kmit’s paintings are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Art Gallery of South Australia and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and many regional galleries.
