Introducing

David Beschi | CHG Represented Artists

"David brings to this gallery a traditional technique of watercolour not focused or lost by the schools of learning in Australia today. He has a confidence and vision rarely seen by watercolourist of our time plus he has the ability to retain the image he wishes to paint without the aid of drawing up the composition. This ability is rare as with his confidence in and of, the medium's limitations."

Mark Widdup.

About The Artists

David Beschi was born in London in May 1941. Educated at Dudden Hill School, he then went on to St. Martins School of Art.

At the age of 18, his first exhibition was held at High Holbourne Town Hall and sold out.

David became Assistant Director at Studio Lisa, photographers to the Royal Family and fashion industry. After 3 years moved on to set designing and stage management for English Repertory Theatres and then to Heal's of London, designing private and industrial interiors. During this time his art was being exhibited at The Mansard Gallery, London.

After meeting an Australian in London, David was enticed to come to Australia, arrived in 1976, returned to the UK for 3 years, came back to Melbourne and took up residency.

He has been painting professionally in Australia since 1987, becoming Vice President of The Blackheath Art Society and elected to The Blue Mountains Arts Council.

In 1999 he was elected as an Exhibiting Member of The Royal Art Society and elevated to Associate Member in 2005, he is also invited to exhibit at The Australian Watercolour Institute annual exhibition, His work has been shown at the Royal Academy, Salon de Refuge in London and a catalogue of his work is in The National Library at The Victoria and Albert Museum. He has been made Life Member of Art Societies in Australia and is the Patron of other art institutions,

In June of this year (2010) David was elevated to Fellow of The Royal Art Society

His travels have taken him to many parts of the world, hence his diversity in subject matter. He now resides in an old church in the Hunter Valley, where he also has his studio.

He is published by Woodmansterns & Co., London and he has also won many awards. His paintings are represented in private and corporate collections throughout the world.

Artists Statement

All of my paintings come from drawings in my sketch books and over the years I have amassed more than a hundred books. Going through the pages is like going through a photo album, I can recall the time and place vividly and decide which drawing or doodle is going to become a painting.

While working, unconsciously, the paintings drift from detail to obscure and so the viewer has to fill-in other details with their own imagination, so bringing them into the painting forever. Such is watercolour, the most difficult and the most mysterious of mediums.

Art, "Painted by the talented, sold by the principled to the totally bewildered". A quote I heard a long time ago. I hope you are not bewildered and enjoy the paintings.

CHG Director's Statement

How refreshing is David's personality when he enters the gallery.

Only a mild extrovert !!! He does not portray the stereotype of a watercolourist and all its required discipline. In fact his painting life appears a contrast to his life and the way he chooses to live it.

All this seems more surprising when one considers the structure of working as a professional watercolourist versus his relaxed manner.

David brings to this gallery a traditional technique of watercolour not focussed or lost by the schools of learning in Australia today. He has a confidence and vision rarely seen by watercolourist of our time plus he has the ability to retain the image he wishes to paint without the aid of drawing up the composition. This ability is rare as with his confidence in and of, the medium's limitations.

Born in London with formal art studies overseas, produces a different art and life perspective from Australia!

I would imagine this early art training, combined with his innate skills has done much to build the foundation of working with this volatile medium. Plus he has the chance to see and learn from the 'Masters' at many a museum in UK and Europe.

An observer of people and lifestyle, David selects the everyday person to paint with many of the situations drawn from overseas. He has a fascination with architecture, space and atmosphere in the landscape or seascape and enjoys the interior with figures.

The whimsical amuses, often revealed in a character study; something he shares with the famous Australian portrait character artist Sir William Dobell who also had a London Art School background.

Watercolour is not a medium appreciated by all, however I urge you to see Beschi's paintings. If you like them, look for the spontaneity and freshness. Buy, because you like them and enjoy the subject. On the other hand if you can't get it; please call me to guide you through the watercolour experience.
