CHG Director's Statement: Ray Crooke (AM) was an Australian artist known for his tropical landscapes. He won the Archibald Prize in 1969 with a portrait of George Johnston.

Crooke adored the landscape and the people of the tropics. Using these as inspiration he created pictures full of harmony, light and colour.

Christopher Allen, The Australian’s national art critic, said “Ray Crooke’s familiar images of islanders could be considered decorative and predictable, and some will have reservations about their romantic exoticism, but his strong sense of composition and evident sympathy with his subjects were always appealing."
